Playboi Carti has been charged with misdemeanor assault following an alleged altercation involving his girlfriend, his security guard, and a limousine driver while in Utah earlier this month. According to TMZ, the incident occurred on Oct. 2, when the 30-year-old rapper — born Jordan Terrell Carter — was in the state preparing for his Antagonist Tour, which included a scheduled performance at the Delta Center in Salt Lake City the following night. Carti was issued a citation for assault on the night of Oct. 2. One week later, on Oct. 9, he was formally charged with misdemeanor assault in Wasatch County.
Deputies from the Wasatch County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a fight between two men near River Road and U.S. Route 40. When they arrived, they encountered Carti, his girlfriend, his security guard, and the limo driver, all of whom were allegedly involved in the confrontation.
The driver, identified as Carl Reynolds, told authorities he had been transporting Carti and his group from Park City to Orem for a tour rehearsal when an argument broke out between the rapper and his girlfriend. Reynolds claimed the dispute became heated and that Carti allegedly threatened both him and the woman.
According to a police report from news outlet KSL, the driver said, “the fight was escalating to a point he was uncomfortable and wanted to de-escalate and separate them.” Reynolds contacted Carti’s security guard—who was in a separate SUV—to suggest the pair travel in different vehicles. When Reynolds stopped the car, the report states, Carti’s girlfriend became upset, and everyone exited their vehicles. The report further alleges that Carti “got upset and hit the girlfriend,” though Reynolds said he did not witness the act directly but saw the aftermath, describing the woman as “hunched over” and “holding near her chest.” Reynolds also claimed that as he turned his head, the rapper struck him on the left side of his face. “I turned my head for just a brief minute off to the right-hand side, and [Carti] hits me in the face.” Deputies documented visible redness on Reynolds’ jaw, as well as markings “consistent with the space on a fist or open hand between knuckles.”
Carti allegedly admitted to hitting the driver “for stopping in a weird place and dropping them off,” though his girlfriend told deputies that she, not Carti, had struck Reynolds. The rapper’s security guard separately stated that he had elbowed the driver. The police report also noted that Carti asked deputies “if there was a way to take care of it now,” to which an officer responded that the matter would need to be handled through the courts.
The latest incident is just the latest in a string of legal troubles for the rapper. In late 2022, Carti was charged with assaulting his then-pregnant girlfriend.
